Your Future Self Doesn’t Take the Summer Off

The small choices you make today are shaping the years ahead.

When we think about looking after our health, it’s easy to focus on today:

How we feel this morning. Whether we’ve managed to fit in a walk. What we’ve eaten. How well we slept.

These things matter, of course, but there’s another way of looking at them that I find incredibly motivating.
What if the choices we make today are really a gift to our future selves?

Not because we’re trying to be perfect, but because we want to keep doing the things we love for as long as possible.

Looking Beyond Today

One of the conversations I have most often with women is about what they want life to look like in the years ahead.

They don’t usually say they want to lift heavier weights or run faster.

Instead, they say things like:

“I want to keep travelling.”
“I want to play with my grandchildren.”
“I want to be able to get up from the floor without worrying.”
“I want to carry my own shopping.”
“I want to stay independent.”
“I want to have the energy to enjoy life.”

Those are wonderful goals. And they’re all supported by the small things we do now.

Health Is an Investment

We often think of investing in pensions or savings because we know they’ll benefit us later (I wish I had applied this about my pensions in my 20’s!).

Our health works in much the same way.

Every strength session helps maintain muscle.
Every walk supports your heart.
Every balanced meal provides the nutrients your body needs.
Every good night’s sleep allows your body and mind to recover.
Every glass of water helps your body function well.

No single choice changes everything. But together, over weeks, months and years, they create a strong foundation.

The Summer Trap

Summer has a habit of making us think we’ll “start again” later. Often, the routines disappear or change.

For example: Bedtimes drift. Meals become less structured. Exercise becomes something we’ll get back to after the holidays.

There is nothing wrong with relaxing and enjoying the season.
In fact, making memories, laughing with friends and spending time outdoors are all part of living well.

The important thing is remembering that looking after yourself doesn’t need to stop simply because life looks a little different.
Your routine can flex without disappearing altogether.

Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

During the summer months it is International Self-Care Day which reminds us of something many women find difficult to accept.

Looking after yourself isn’t something you earn once everything else has been done.

It isn’t the reward at the end of a very long to-do list.
It’s one of the reasons you’re able to keep doing everything else.

When you’re rested, you’re more patient.
When you’re stronger, everyday tasks feel easier.
When you move regularly, you have more confidence in your body.
When you take time to recover, you cope better with life’s demands.

Self-care isn’t an indulgence. It’s part of maintaining the health that supports every other area of your life.

Imagine Meeting Your Future Self

Imagine meeting yourself ten years from now.

What would she thank you for?

Perhaps she’d say:

“Thank you for helping me stay strong.”
“Thank you for looking after my bones.”
“Thank you for encouraging me to keep moving.”
“Thank you for not waiting until something went wrong.”
“Thank you for making time for rest.”

She probably wouldn’t thank you for having the perfect diet or never missing a workout. She’d thank you for being consistent.
For making your health a priority, even in small ways.

Progress Is Built Quietly

One of the most reassuring things about healthy habits is that they don’t need to be dramatic.

Strength is built one workout at a time.
Confidence grows one walk at a time.
Mobility improves one stretch at a time.
Resilience develops each time we choose to begin again instead of giving up.

These changes often happen so gradually that we hardly notice them:
Until one day we realise that climbing the stairs feels easier.
Carrying shopping feels lighter.
Walking feels more comfortable.
Life simply feels easier.

Your Future Starts Today

None of us knows exactly what the future holds, but we can influence how well prepared we are to meet it.

Every healthy choice you make is another brick in the foundations you’re building. Not because you’re chasing perfection. Not because someone told you that you should. But because the woman you’ll become deserves the very best chance of staying healthy, active and independent.

That feels like a pretty good reason to keep going.

This Week’s Takeaway

This week, ask yourself:

“What is one thing I can do today that my future self will thank me for?”

It might be a walk. A strength session. An earlier night. A balanced meal. Or simply taking ten minutes to pause and breathe.

Small choices made consistently often become the biggest gifts we ever give ourselves.
I’d love to know, what will do choose.
